The power plant was commissioned in 1969. The intake for the plant is in Lake Botnedalsvatn, where there is a regulating dam at the outlet to the Frolandsåi River.
When the plant was put into operation, the bedrock cracked around the unlined pressure shaft which led to major leaks. The pressure shaft was then lined with steel. The lesson learned from this has led to pressure shafts now being built with significantly more bedrock between them and the surface.
Byrte power plant is equipped with a Francis turbine which uses a gross height of fall of 295 metres.
The plant has an installed capacity of 25 MW and an annual mean production of 112 GWh.
