The power plant has three Francis turbines. The intake reservoir is Lake Vessingsjøen and the height of fall is 377 metres.
The power plant was originally considered as the most modern in Norway. The plant was commissioned in 1960 and was financed with loans from Sweden. The loans were financed by exporting part of the power produced to Sweden. This was historic because it was the first time Norway exported power abroad.
One special aspect of this plant is that a generating unit from a later development in the area, called the Tya generating unit, is also located in the machine room of Nea power plant.
