The power plant was commissioned during 1985-1986 and uses water resources and the height of fall from Lake Blåsjø, Norway's largest reservoir.
The power plant has four generating units, two of which can be reversed to pump water back up into the reservoir instead of producing electricity.
Architect Egil Sorteberg drew the plans for the reception building and other structures, and designed the machine hall inside the mountain. Saurdal power plant is proposed to be protected under Statkraft's conservation plan. This includes the exteriors of the reception building, emergency generator building and gatehouses.
Statkraft's subsidiary Skagerak Energi also has an ownership stake in Saurdal power plant.
