Cahua is a run-of-river hydropower plant that generates power by turbining the water of the Pativilca river. As a result of the automation of the plant in 2014, the plant is remotely operated from the dispatch centre in Lima.
An overhaul of the plant was undertaken in 2013 - 2014 to reduce the rate of failure and therefore operating cost. The condition of major equipment was assessed to increase their efficacy and efficiency.
The annual energy production from Cahua hydropower plant is about 300 GWh, enough to power approximately 190,000 homes.
Statkraft Peru implements sustainable development projects aimed at the management of good agricultural practices for fruit production, and activities focused on improving local educational capacities. Also, joint efforts are being made with the Government to launch educational campaigns on water-related issues, quality education, health, and others. Additionally, environmental controls are in place as part of the environmental monitoring program and solid waste integral management.
